Interdisciplinary activity is one of the key aspects of the University of Toronto’s vision as articulated in our academic plan, Stepping UP: 2004-2010. Supporting greater collaboration and synergy across the university’s important creative and performing arts programs, centres and facilities has been identified as a focal area for support at the institutional level.

Stepping UP proposed that an advisory committee on the creative and performing arts be established to facilitate the development and implementation of programmatic synergies and collaborations among the University's many arts programs. This has resulted in the establishment of the University of Toronto Arts Council. Its goal is to help enhance the student experience, raise the profile of the activities and programs in the community, and create opportunities for dynamic and important partnerships with cultural organizations in the Greater Toronto Area. The Provost has formally established two associated working groups , one focusing on the academic program initiatives and one focusing on co-curricular activities and opportunities.
